The involvement of Joe Biden in the former national security adviser Michael Flynn case raises important questions about the Democratic presidential candidate’s integrity and honesty.
In May, When first asked by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos about the investigation of Flynn, the former vice president was not honest. He said “I know nothing about those moves to investigate Michael Flynn” and accused the current administration of “diversion” and unfairly criticizing President Obama. But Stephanopoulos pursued the matter further, pointing out that Biden was present at the January 5, 2017 meeting where there was a briefing about the FBI’s plans to investigate Flynn. Biden’s participation in the Flynn investigation briefing was already public knowledge. (Twitter post by Byron York, 5/7/2020 – https://bit.ly/2Mxjyut)
At that point, Biden changed his tune and said “I thought you asked me whether or not I had anything to do with him being prosecuted. I was aware that they asked for an investigation, but that’s all I know about it. I don’t think anything else.” (article by Tobias Hoonhout, 5/12/2020 – https://bit.ly/2MEeMeo)
But Biden was involved in the briefing meeting, along with other top Obama officials such as James Comey, John Brennan, James Clapper, and Samantha Power. (Twitter post by Catherine Herridge of CBS News, 5/13/2020 – https://bit.ly/377qWWF). Many observers consider this an example of how officials at the very highest level of the Obama-Biden administration were deliberately working to improperly undermine the incoming Trump administration, breaking with all normal practices during a peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next.
Since all of this, the Department of Justice has dropped all charges against Flynn, but unfortunately the damage to his reputation has already been done. Perhaps the only silver lining in all of this is that Attorney General Bill Barr has appointed an outside federal prosecutor to investigate the role of top Obama-Biden officials in the unmasking of Flynn.
The troubling aspect of this whole affair, as it pertains to Joe Biden, is all the more worrisome when viewed in the context of Biden’s other troubling ethical issues, such as accusation of corruption regarding China and Ukraine, Tara Reade’s allegation that Biden sexually assaulted her, and many instances of gross exaggeration and dishonesty in Biden’s past. Voters certainly should take all of this into consideration before making Biden commander-in-chief over our military and before giving Biden the keys to the White House.
