This year, the Democratic National Convention (to be held August 17 to August 20) will differ in many ways from tradition. There won’t be an arena packed with delegates, most of the speakers will appear on video rather than in person, and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden won’t even actually be at the convention. Will he give his acceptance speech from his basement?
But in a more fundamental sense, the Democrats’ convention will be the same old, same old. The same liberal politicians pushing the same failed liberal policies.
According to reports by Politico and CNN, speakers at the convention will include Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Nancy Pelosi. And both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama will have prominent speaking roles during the week’s proceedings.
Yes, it will be the same old, same old – gun control, amnesty for illegal aliens, climate change, racial division, and advocacy of traditional liberal tax and spend policies.
Of course, there will be some new twists on these old themes. There will certainly be lots of emphasis on the movement to “Defund the Police,” and on keeping the economy locked down due to COVID-19, and on the “Green New Deal”.
The old liberalism, increasingly flavored with socialism, will certainly be evident. But not only will the convention feature an old socialist like Bernie Sanders – it will also highlight a new socialist. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes, the socialist congresswoman from New York who is leading “climate change” policy for Biden, will have a high profile appearance.
At the time of this writing, we don’t yet know who Biden will pick as his running mate. But the handwriting on the wall is already pretty clear: the Democratic convention will represent the same old, same old failed liberal policies of the Obama-Biden years. That’s not much of a record for Biden to run on. Especially in these polarized and divisive times, the last thing we need is a return to the ways of the Obama-Biden years.
